Highway 63 Road Closure (March 24, 2024 - April 15, 2024)

To complete the underpass, a portion of Highway 63 will be closed, starting the evening of Sunday, March 24, 2024. The section that will be temporarily closed is located north of Tim Bradley Way and south of Watts Drive. It will be closed up to three weeks.  

To reduce the impact on local traffic and campus activities, the closure will start at the same time as the spring breaks for both Rolla Public Schools and Missouri S&T. Construction crews will work 24/7 to minimize the length of time the highway section will be closed.  

During the closure, the City of Rolla and S&T will provide clear signage to indicate alternative routes for drivers to reach their destinations.  

Construction Impacts (Fall 2023 - March 2024)

The diagram below shows the impacts to pedestrian walkways by the construction activities for Phase 3 Spring Semester 2024 through Summer Semester 2024. Additional updates will be provided throughout the construction period.

Project Summary

The pedestrian underpass project includes replacement of an existing tunnel under US HWY 63 and construction of a new, larger underpass in its place. As a priority to the S&T Campus Master Plan, this new underpass will include new sidewalks, landscaping, lighting, and a new, below-grade pedestrian crossing that will create a safer, more intuitive crossing point for pedestrians needing to cross HWY 63. The new pedestrian crossing will be a three-sided structure that is taller, wider, brighter, and a shorter distance to cross than the existing path. This will provide a safer and more pleasant crossing than the existing tunnel.

Construction will occur August 2023 to August 2024. The first phase of construction will take place on the west side of the Hwy 63. Construction on the east side of Hwy 63 will begin January 2024, and the final phase to install the underpass will begin March 2024.
